Science is picking up speed.
We’re making memes along the way.

Faster research steps. Wider searches. New possibilities.

a faster step.

A paper to read. A hypothesis to test. A simulation to run. A result that sends everyone back to the beginning.

Science moves through small steps as well as big breakthroughs. We follow what happens when AI changes the pace of that process—saving time, lowering barriers, expanding a search, or making a new approach possible.

A shorter research step can make room for another experiment. A wider search can reveal possibilities that were previously out of reach.

The breakthroughs matter.
So do the steps that make them possible.

ETH stands for Exponential Time Hypothesis. The familiar letters create the double take. The longer story is about AI helping science move forward.

Unexpected meaning.

A conversation about AI and scientific progress led us to a familiar set of letters with an unexpected full name: Exponential Time Hypothesis.

Greg Brockman’s post about three scientific discoveries was the starting point. Our story continues wherever AI helps science move forward.

ORIGIN NOTE

An old assumption.
A new question.

OpenAI reported a result refuting the Exponential Time Hypothesis, with public proof materials. It inspired our name—and our interest in how AI changes the pace of research.

Evidence & scope
A result reported by OpenAI, with materials released for independent examination. We have not independently verified the proof.
Why it matters
New questions about computational difficulty and the search for better algorithms. Refuting ETH does not establish P = NP.

context.

What is ETH?

ETH is an independent meme project about AI accelerating science. The name stands for Exponential Time Hypothesis.

Why that name?

It connects a familiar abbreviation with a concept from computational complexity. The contrast gets your attention; the broader story is AI helping science move forward.

Do you only cover mathematics?

We follow progress across mathematics, biology, chemistry, materials, and physics. Each story explains how AI contributes; it does not need to be directly related to the mathematical ETH.

What counts as progress?

Research steps that become faster, less costly, more capable, or easier to access with AI. We explain the specific change and the evidence behind it. A theoretical result, a simulation, and a laboratory demonstration are different stages.

Is this Ethereum or a research organization?

This is an independent meme project. We do not represent Ethereum, the Ethereum Foundation, OpenAI, or the researchers whose work we discuss.

Did this project produce the research?

Research credit belongs to the people and organizations behind each result. We create commentary and memes, with links to their work.
